Oriented ourselves around town - came across a ceremony in Piazza del Libertaria - commemorating liberation from Fascists we found out next day - had a lovely coffee in the piazza and then walked out to the Church of St Pietro and around to the Ponte del Torre, a huge bridge across the ravine connecting the ‘holy mountain’ with Spoleto - took us about an hour and a half of slow walking. Finished up with ‘snacks’ at the bar at the top - a bottle of prosecco and some sandwiches.
Cobbled streets
lovely nooks and crannies
Anzac Day - also a commemoration of Garibaldi - could visualise the scene in 'Lunch with Mussolini' where the troops come in and attack the women in the square......
The view of the surrounding hillside
didn't really need directions - just followed our noses....
simply glorious
The Church of St Pietro in the distance...
and up close - the carvings were remarkable
we were getting close to the bridge and this was the view
the view of the old prison (now a museum) from across the Ponte del Torre..
The Ponte del Torre - an escape route from the Rocca (prison) and an aqueduct
Part of the scenic walk we went on until we reached.....
A bar and sat to have refreshments - lovely prosecco to wash it down..
Once again it was the things we ‘discovered’ that made the day - Etruscan ruins, Roman ruins built on Etruscan ruins, roads dug up to show the original road underneath…. A gorgeous duomo just in the middle of a piazza…..
Glorious city, glorious day. Spent the afternoon on the terrace and then cooked pasta at home for dinner. Watched a couple of movies - Angels and Demons, so we could revisit Rome!!! And The Rock so we could revisit San Francisco….
