Day 22 - Monday 26 April - Norcia and the Piano Grande

Sarah's birthday... Happy birthday darling..

Started with a walk back up to the information centre - got some maps and directions to the Piano Grande that Ivan had told me would be full of wild flowers in spring. Made a picnic lunch and then headed off a bit late to start the day really - went via Norcia - what a great town… boar heads on every second shop front! The specialty of the area is Pork and truffles - also polenta - bought a tart made with polenta and filled with apricot.

 The Norcia town gate
Just so you know what the shop sells....
More - porcetta, salami and cheese the specialty
The gorgeous town square - churches on both corners
A lovely view down an alley

Kept going towards Castelluccio - only car on the road after a few miles - gorgeous scenery, but a windy mountain road this time!! Had a bit of a derail when Graham kept going straight when I had thought he read the road sign and assumed he was going in the right direction…. Once we were on the right road though, we quickly hit the spectacular section - mountains with snow, a long vally with cattle walking on the road - calves milking from their mothers…. Castelluccio is at the top of the hill - a very beautiful little village, again with the boar heads outside the shop to let you know what it sells….

We certainly got up high - no traffic up here - almost as hairy as the Amalfi coast!
No wild flowers.... this is where they should have been - 4 weeks too early I think!!
Still very beautiful - the cows had right of way on the road
The town sits on the top of one hill withthe snow covered mountains in the background
 getting closer....
About the only shop in town - it was worth the drive......
After we ate our picnic lunch Graham needed a toilet stop - only trouble was, no trees!!!!

Had our picnic parked on the side of the road (Graham hadn’t brought any warm clothes….) and then headed towards Visso in Le Marche for the way home - drove past a number of towns on hills with walls, and also a couple of fish farms - too early for the spring flowers - can only imagine what the Piano looks like in full bloom….

Major derail finding our way back to the apartment - didn’t speak for the rest of the afternoon. I slept, Graham read on the terrace.

Had dinner around the corner - roast pork as the main course - very nice - spoke very little English, but with our bad Italian and their bad English, we managed……. Started late at 9pm as per Italian tradition, but everyone was closing up by 10pm so we were a bit confused!!!
