Days 38 - 41 Wednesday 12 May - Saturday 15 May - Mykonos

What a fantastic little island - the hotel was perfect - just like the images on the website on the right - beautiful room, lovely pool and a great pool barman! Settled down to some Mojitos by the pool with a shared plate of seafood then went for a walk into town for a late dinner - immediately got lost - tried to find a restaurant recommended by the hotel but ended up at the windmills instead…. Found the sign for the restaurant just as we managed to head home after dinner in the Venetian area of town - the water laps right up to the buildings… Met some aussies who told us about a little silver jewellery shop under the windmills that had handmade silver at good prices.

Never seen such ferries the size of these! The semi trailers went in frontways and had enough room to turn around to come out frontways as well.
We stopped at Syros to let some passengers off and pick up some extras
The passengers came out the same way as the trucks and other vehicles.... the ferries are very comfortable - lots of room to walk around and lots of places to get food.
This is Mykonos town from our hotel window
on the hills away from town, it is sparsely populated and really not much vegetation - quite barren in fact.
we spent a deal of time by the pool.......
Graham could have gotten very used to this life! (yes that's a mojito in his hand)
The sunset was really quite beautiful
The pool was one of those 'infinity' ones - it felt like we were floating on the mediterranean
the houses in the streets were close together - no cars allowed in Mykonos town - lovely cobbled streets but a bit confusing
The windmills became a familiar marker, so we knew if we were headed in the right direction....

Hired a quad bike the next day and went for a tour around the island - not much on it - basically a rock in the middle of the ocean. Had a swim at a polluted beach - looked lovely from a distance but had lots of garbage bags floating in it. Returned the bike after a few hours - that was enough of our ‘Born to be wild’ easyrider moment - and headed back to the pool for more mojitos….. Had dinner at the hotel restaurant, after a pedicure in a little shop down the road.

'Little Venice' - right on the water
People were basically sitting over the water to eat.....
The view of the windmills from Little Venice
 Posing on our balcony -
Not quite as good as the Asian tourists we saw, but almost!
Glad we were wearing helmets - nearly knocked Graham out with mine!
Our little quad bike - not as much fun as I had thought, but glad we did it.....

The water at this beach was freezing - and the waves broke right on the edge before abig dip, so it was also dangerous - much better to sit at the bar and have a drink!
Row upon row of beach lounges - still not the same as going to a beach in Oz...

Went shopping the next day - bought some silver rings in the silver shop and also discovered THE dress - the girl said everyone who tried it on loved it and we thought it was an exaggeration - but she was right! So right that we bought it - a bargain at 400 euros…… now to just pack it into the suit case….

Went back into town for dinner, after a massage in the room by a boy about as young as Jason - poor thing having to massage this old woman!! He used some olive oil product that made my skin look luminous so when we came across a shop in town selling olive oil products, we stopped and bought some…… the woman in the shop was married to a New Zealander and asked us where we were headed for dinner - she told us not to go there and then asked her husband to take us to their favourite restaurant - it turned out to be a gem!! Very entertaining - we were still there 2 hours later when they turned up for dinner after closing the shop!

It was here we discovered ‘Mystique’ a liqueur made from the sap of the mustique tree - very nice indeed.

Heard the town having fun until the early hours - we slept with the doors open, but shutters closed…
